July 19 - Bodo, Norway

We will be crossing the Arctic Circle tonight so we'll have our first sunset in a while.

A whole 2-1/2 hours of "night".

This morning we had a walking tour with a perfectly nice young woman who needed a bigger voice.  There were 24 of us and we had to get really close to hear her.  This isn't a very big town (53,000) but it has the northernmost train station and is a very busy port.  But walking around you wouldn't know it.  It was very quiet even though we saw the first stoplight in many days.

This seems to be Norway's version of our 7-11 stores.  We've seen them all over.

This is a bunker left over from WWII.  It's right outside the Bodo Cathedral.

The electric bell tower outside the cathedral.

The bench pews had heaters under each which would keep your bottom and your legs warm.

The cathedral has an interesting history.  The original wooden building was destroyed when the Germans invaded in 1940.  The townspeople knew the attack was coming, so one man took all the "silverware" that he could carry away hidden in a vegetable delivery box on his bicycle.  I guess she meant candelabras and perhaps small statues when she said silverware.  It remained safely hidden throughout the occupation and when the new cathedral opened in the ealy 1950's, the items were put back.  The new cathedral looks really large to me, but the guide said that the new one, including the bell tower, would fit completely inside the original.  Hard to believe.

This cute mural was on a wall near the cathedral.

The next stop was at a coffee shop/bakery where we sampled their very nice coffee and a danish.  At this point, we decided to peel off from the tour and wander a bit on our own looking for a few things we needed.

There was a nice covered shopping mall very near the pier.

Just love the beautiful flowers we've seen in most of the cities we've visited.

After lunch in Compass Rose, we headed up to the pool deck.  Again, the weather has been glorious.
A little dip in the hot tub was in order.

We won 1 point today at Trivia with 12/15.  Jan decided to skip dinner, so it was just the 3 of us.
